Town Commissioners — 2023-05-17

This is the May 17, 2023 joint worksession of the Queenstown Commissioners and the Queenstown Street Safety Task Force with Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) representatives to tour and discuss safety and speeding concerns along Main Street/Del Rhodes Ave. SHA said upgrades must follow the MUTCD; they noted lane markings were recently widened and chevrons installed at the curve. The group reviewed specific ideas and SHA responses: converting the Main St./Del Rhodes Ave./Maryland Ave. intersection to a 4‑way (may be possible but requires a peak-period traffic study and could reduce parking); removing a small for‑left parking space in front of the pizzeria (SHA will check ownership); remarking and upgrading crosswalks with vertical white lines, “Ped Xing” markings and new signage (SHA will request); new crosswalks and 3‑way stops at Old Wharf Lane/Main and Thompson Ave/Main were generally unlikely because sidewalks must exist on both sides and ADA issues exist where there are boardwalks/stairs, though SHA will look at a possible crosswalk near Main/Steamboat Ave; rumble strips were ruled problematic because of residential noise but “25 MPH” pavement markings are possible; electronic speed display signs can be requested but the Town would need to buy the signs; and SHA will investigate road markings/signage for the Fire Department entrance. SHA said any final installations would be reviewed with the Commissioners/Task Force first. The Town reported it is exploring additional speed bumps on town streets, repainting existing speed bumps and stop lines, and lowering town road speed limits from 20 to 15 mph.
